During the meeting, the security situation in Syria was discussed, particularly regarding areas surrounding prisons housing members of the ISIS terrorist organization, which are continuously threatened by attempts to breach these facilities and release prisoners—posing a serious threat to the security of Iraq and the region.
The meeting emphasized the importance of maintaining ongoing communication between Iraqi security and military leadership and the International Coalition forces, coordinating tasks according to scheduled timelines, and providing the logistical, administrative, and technical groundwork to carry out missions in a coordinated and safe manner.
The Prime Minister, in turn, praised Admiral Cooper’s role in completing the requirements for the conclusion of the International Coalition’s mission and handing over the Ain al-Asad base to Iraqi forces, as well as the support provided by the Coalition to Iraq in the fight against terrorism and combating ISIS.
He affirmed that the Iraqi leadership has an early assessment of potential regional developments, prompting the government to develop early border protection plans, fortifying them in unprecedented ways, and facilitating the return of the largest possible number of Iraqi families from certain camps, in addition to ongoing political and security efforts with the relevant regional parties.
