Formation of a Joint Higher Coordination Committee between the United States and Iraq

News

The Security Media Cell issued a statement this evening in which it stated the following:

Within the framework of the strategic partnership between Iraq and the United States of America, and based on many years of friendship and joint strategic cooperation in the political, economic, and security fields—efforts that culminated in the joint defeat of ISIS—it was decided to form a Joint Higher Coordination Committee yesterday, March 26, 2026.

At the first meeting of the Joint Higher Coordination Committee, both the Iraqi and American sides agreed to intensify cooperation to prevent terrorist attacks and to ensure that Iraqi territory is not used as a launching point for any aggression against the Iraqi people, Iraqi security forces, and Iraqi strategic facilities and assets, as well as against American personnel, diplomatic missions, and the international coalition.

Both sides also affirmed their commitment to keeping Iraq outside the scope of the ongoing military conflict in the region, with full respect for its sovereignty, and to supporting Iraq in ensuring that its land, airspace, and territorial waters are not used to threaten it, neighboring countries, or countries in the region.

The two sides further reaffirmed their commitment to coordinating counterterrorism efforts in a way that prioritizes Iraqi-led action to achieve shared objectives, while preserving stability and safeguarding Iraq’s sovereignty.
