The Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control, represented by the Directorate of Patents and Industrial Designs, announced the granting of 33 patents during the first quarter of 2026, including 16 patents in the medical and healthcare fields. This announcement reflects the growing national interest in scientific innovation and the support of Iraqi researchers.

Dr. Mohammed Jamal Jassim, Director of the Directorate, explained that “the granted patents covered a wide range of fields, including biotechnology, medical devices, engineering solutions, and nanomaterials, highlighting the diversity of Iraq’s innovation base and its ability to compete in research and development.”

Among the most notable medical innovations granted patents are a self-activating vaccine against HIV to prevent viral latency; a quantum dot-based optical biosensor for early laboratory detection of psoriasis; and a formulation combining thyme herb with chromium-gold nanoparticles prepared using plasma jet technology to enhance the effectiveness of taxane chemotherapy in inhibiting breast cancer cells. Additional innovations include the use of potassium bromide as an alternative to lithium fluoride in thermoluminescent dosimeters for measuring radiation doses; implantable artificial vocal cords placed inside the esophagus; a device to relieve spasms of the latissimus dorsi and gluteal muscles to reduce pressure on the vertebrae; an automatic electronic mercury blood pressure monitor; and an innovative engineering design for orthodontic wires to achieve optimal torque during treatment.

In a statement, Professor Dr. Eng. Fayyad Mohammed Abd, head of the Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control, affirmed that “the granting of these patents aligns with the organization’s direction to stimulate an environment for inventors and support Iraqi researchers, especially in vital sectors such as health, energy, and advanced materials.” He added that “through the Directorate of Patents and Industrial Designs, the organization seeks to simplify registration procedures and provide technical and legal support to innovators to ensure the protection of their creations and transform them into marketable products, serving the national economy and enhancing Iraq’s competitiveness regionally and internationally.”

These patents are considered a positive indicator of the growth of applied scientific research culture in Iraq, as the organization continues its efforts to create a supportive environment for innovation through workshops, specialized consultations, and collaboration with academic and research institutions, aiming to build a sustainable knowledge-based economy.
